Are scholarships taxable?
As a rule, scholarships are not taxable income and therefore do not need to be entered in the tax return. They are exempt from income tax as long as certain conditions are met.
This tax exemption applies especially when the scholarship is used solely to support academic or research activities and is not paid in exchange for work.
When does a scholarship affect the tax return?
Even though a scholarship is tax-free, it can still affect the amount of education expenses you can deduct – particularly if the scholarship covers not only your living costs but also study-related costs.
How does it impact education expenses?
If your scholarship partially covers education-related costs (e.g. tuition, textbooks, or transportation), you’ll need to reflect this in your tax return.
This means:
📌 You must reduce your deductible education expenses by the portion covered by the scholarship.
Example: If you spent €1,000 on your studies in a year and €400 of that was covered by your scholarship, you may only claim €600 in your tax return.
How do you enter your studies in the Taxfix app?
You can file your tax return with Taxfix as a student as well.
👉 In the “About you” section, select the status “Studying / In training.”
👉 You can enter more details about your educational expenses in the “Education & Studies” section.
