🚀 Your Guide
What are extraordinary expenses?
Generally, private living expenses are not tax-deductible. However, under special circumstances, some costs may be classified as “extraordinary expenses.”
The key requirement is that these costs are necessary and unavoidable. The tax office only considers them if they exceed your reasonable personal burden. This threshold depends on your income, marital status, and the number of children you have.
The Taxfix app calculates this threshold based on your information and only includes qualifying medical expenses once the limit is exceeded.
What extraordinary expenses can you report in the app?
In the Taxfix app, you can enter the following costs:
-
Medical expenses
-
Care expenses
-
Disability-related expenses
-
Funeral expenses
-
Other extraordinary burdens
What medical expenses are deductible?
The expenses must be prescribed by a doctor and not avoidable. Examples of deductible costs include:
-
Doctor bills (e.g. dentist, psychotherapist, alternative practitioner)
-
Prescription fees
-
Medically necessary aids such as glasses, hearing aids, wheelchairs
-
Vaccinations with a doctor's prescription
-
Therapeutic treatments to prevent illness (with proof)
-
Birth-related costs like midwife bills, prenatal classes, and pregnancy exercises
-
Travel to medical appointments or treatments
💡 Some treatments require a public health certificate issued before treatment begins, such as massages or therapeutic spa visits.
Important: Keep all receipts and invoices. Only documented expenses will be accepted.
What expenses are not deductible?
The tax office usually does not accept the following expenses:
-
Vitamin supplements, nutritional products, diet foods
-
Contraceptives
-
Cosmetic procedures without medical necessity
If part of your expenses were reimbursed by your health insurance provider, you can only claim the portion you paid out of pocket.
How to enter medical costs in the Taxfix app
-
Go to the “Expenses” category.
-
Select the option ‘Medical expenses’ for the question on unavoidable costs (so-called extraordinary expenses).
-
Choose the type of cost (e.g. medication, dental treatment, doctor bills).
-
You can also enter travel costs to doctors or clinics:
-
Indicate where you went and which means of transport you used.
-
If you visited multiple doctors in the same year, enter each one individually with route, transport, and number of trips.
-
If you used public transport or a flight, enter the actual ticket costs. For car travel, the app automatically uses the standard mileage allowance.
-
💡 This way, you can be sure your medical expenses are recorded accurately and completely.
