🚀 Your Guide
Insurance Contributions as Special Expenses
Many insurances can be deducted as so-called precautionary expenses under special expenses. These include, for example:
-
Statutory health insurance
-
Statutory pension insurance
-
Long-term care insurance
-
Unemployment insurance
-
Riester and Rürup pensions
-
Liability and car liability insurance
-
Supplementary health insurance (e.g. dental insurance)
-
Occupational disability and incapacity insurance
-
Term life insurance
🔒 Limit: A maximum of €1,900 (single) or €3,800 (married). The Taxfix app automatically takes this limit into account.
Since contributions to statutory health, long-term care, and unemployment insurance often already use up most of the cap, additional private insurance policies usually don’t reduce your tax burden any further. In such cases, it’s worth checking whether the insurance is related to your job.
Insurance Contributions as Work-Related Expenses
If your insurance is job-related, you can deduct it as work-related expenses. The advantage: no cap applies. Every euro above the €1,200 basic allowance directly reduces your tax.
Examples:
-
Professional liability insurance
-
Legal protection insurance for job-related matters
-
Job-related portion of accident insurance
Even household contents insurance can be partially deducted if you have a home office. In that case, you can deduct the portion of the annual premium that relates to the home office.
Which Insurances Are Not Deductible?
Not all types of insurance are tax-relevant. The following cannot be claimed:
-
Household contents and building insurance (except for home office use)
-
Bicycle insurance
-
Comprehensive car insurance (Kasko)
-
Travel baggage and trip cancellation insurance
-
Capital life insurance policies signed after January 1, 2005
How to Enter Insurance Contributions in the Taxfix App
You can enter your insurance information under the “Expenses” category.
💡 For tax year 2024 and later:
Select “Other insurance” when asked: “Would you like to enter information for the year 20XX on the following types of insurance (excluding data from your payslip)?”
You’ll then be able to choose from a list of other eligible types of insurance.
⚠️ Note: The app only asks for tax-relevant contracts. If your insurance isn’t listed, it likely means it can’t be claimed for tax purposes.
