Getting Started
To begin, gather the essential information and documents. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Personal Information of the Deceased:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Tax ID
- Your Information as an Heir:
- Your current address (used for tax-related communication)
- Your IBAN for any tax refunds
Once you have these details, you’ll need to submit additional documents for verification before completing the tax filing process.
Identification Process
As identification is a mandatory step for all users, you will need to complete it by uploading a valid ID and taking a selfie. Please ensure you use your own personal identification documents and not those of the deceased.
Our system uses automated verification, so your identification may be rejected since it won’t match the tax subject. However, this will not prevent you from submitting the tax declaration.
After completing all the required steps and successfully filing the tax return, please contact our customer support team. Be sure to explain that the declaration is for a deceased relative and attach the Certificate of Inheritance to your message.
Certificate of Inheritance – Why It’s Essential
The Certificate of Inheritance (Erbschein) officially proves your right to handle the tax matters of the deceased. Without this document, tax submission cannot proceed.
What You Need to Provide
- A legally issued certificate of inheritance that includes:
- The deceased’s name
- An official legal stamp and signature from a probate court or legal authority
What If You Don’t Have the Certificate?
Unfortunately, tax filing cannot continue without this document. However, if you’ve already started the submission and were charged, reach out to us—we’ll make sure you get a refund.
What If There Are Multiple Heirs?
If the estate has more than one heir, additional steps are required to ensure proper authorization and compliance.
Additional Documents Needed:
- A Power of Attorney (PoA) or a written agreement signed by all heirs, appointing one person to represent the group.
- Identification documents and verification selfies from all heirs.
What If These Documents Are Missing?
Without proper authorization from all heirs, we won’t be able to proceed with the tax submission. If you’ve already made a payment, contact us to receive a refund.
Which Expenses Can Be Deducted?
You may be able to deduct costs such as:
- Funeral expenses
- Legal or administrative fees tied to estate management
How Do I Handle Income Earned After Death?
- Any income received up until the date of death must be reported in the deceased’s final tax return.
- Income generated after death might need to be declared under the heirs' names.
What If I’m Missing Important Documents?
Contact banks, employers, or relevant institutions to request copies. Although missing documents can delay the process, they are crucial for filing correctly.
When Is the Filing Deadline?
Typically, the deadline aligns with the regular tax filing date. In some cases, an extension may be available—check with your local tax office for details.
