You moved to Germany during the year or left Germany to work abroad? Then you can generally file your tax return with Taxfix – provided certain conditions are met. We’ll explain what to watch out for.
-
A residence in Germany for part of the tax year is required.
-
Foreign income is partly supported – depending on type, origin, and period.
-
Double taxation agreements and complex cases with two simultaneous residences are not covered by Taxfix.
🚀 Your Guide
What are the requirements?
If you moved to Germany or from Germany to another country during the tax year for which you want to file a return, you can use our app to file your taxes. However, certain requirements apply regarding your residence and foreign income.
Whether your case can be covered by the Taxfix app depends on:
-
the type and duration of your residence,
-
the type and timing of foreign income,
-
and whether a double taxation agreement (DTA) applies.
➡️ Cases involving a DTA or crediting of foreign tax against German tax as well as simultaneous residences in two countries are not currently supported by Taxfix.
💡 Don’t worry: The app automatically checks whether your case is supported – registration is free and non-binding.
Your place of residence
You can use Taxfix if:
-
you lived in Germany for part of the tax year, and
-
you did not simultaneously have two fully available residences in Germany and abroad.
For example: if you had unlimited access to housing in both countries (e.g. keys, leases, dual registration), Taxfix cannot handle your case. But if there was a clear cut-off between locations, you can generally use Taxfix.
Foreign income while abroad
If you lived abroad and earned income during that time, you can enter it in Taxfix:
-
Salary
-
Capital income (e.g. interest, dividends)
-
Rental income
-
Agricultural and forestry income
➡️ This income is not taxable in Germany, but it affects your tax rate through the progression clause.
Foreign income during your time in Germany
If you had foreign income while living in Germany, you can enter it in Taxfix if:
-
you received delayed salary for previous work abroad,
-
you received salary from a foreign employer for work performed in Germany,
-
you earned rental income from property in the EU/EFTA (except Spain),
-
you had agricultural or forestry income from within the EU/EFTA (except Spain),
-
you earned interest or dividends from foreign accounts.

Unsupported cases
Unfortunately, Taxfix cannot support you if you:
-
earned rental income from property outside the EU/EFTA or in Spain,
-
earned agricultural income outside the EU/EFTA or in Spain,
-
worked for a foreign employer abroad while maintaining a residence in Germany,
-
received capital income that was not interest or dividends (e.g. stock/fund gains),
-
received one or more foreign pensions,
-
sold property abroad,
-
had other types of foreign income not specifically listed.
➡️ These limitations also apply if you lived exclusively in Germany during the tax year but still had foreign income.
