If you have questions about your tax return, your local tax office is the main point of contact. But how do you know which one is responsible for you? Here's everything you need to know.
-
Your responsible tax office depends on your primary residence.
-
It may change after you move or separate from a partner.
-
In the Taxfix app, you select your tax office using your ZIP code.
🚀 Your Guide
Which tax office is responsible?
In most cases, your responsible tax office is based on your registered residence.
-
If you have multiple residences, single individuals are assigned based on where they spend most of their time.
-
For married couples, it’s the office for the family residence, regardless of whether you file jointly or separately.
Example: You live with your family in Düsseldorf but work during the week in Hamburg. Your tax office remains in Düsseldorf.
How do I find my tax office?
You can find your tax office online through the Federal Central Tax Office by searching with your ZIP code.
💡 In the Taxfix app, simply enter your ZIP code — then choose your tax office from the list and save it.
What happens after moving?
After moving, the tax office responsible is the one for your new address.
-
If you move within the same city, your tax office may remain the same — unless you switch districts in a larger city.
-
If you move to another city (e.g. from Frankfurt to Berlin), the new tax office is responsible.
Sent your return – then moved?
If you submitted your tax return before moving:
-
Within the same state, the old tax office can usually forward your return internally.
-
If you moved to another state, you may need to resubmit it.
➡️ First contact your original tax office to ask. If forwarding isn’t possible, contact our Support so we can re-enable submission to the correct office.
What if you separated from your partner?
After a separation:
-
You can still file jointly for the year of separation — the tax office of either partner may remain responsible.
-
If both of you moved out, the tax office of the higher earner is responsible.
-
If filing separately, each person submits their return to their own local tax office.
Tax office can't find your return?
Sometimes your return has not yet been linked to your tax ID.
✅ If this happens:
-
Log in to your Taxfix account.
-
Open the relevant tax year and go to "View details" > "View submitted PDF".
-
Email the PDF with the note “Not for the tax office” directly to your tax office as proof.
If your return still can't be located, let us know — we can enable it for resubmission.
How to change the tax office
If you accidentally selected the wrong tax office:
-
First contact the office where your return was sent. It may forward it.
-
If not, our Support can help you resubmit your return free of charge.
