A child with a disability typically requires more support than other children. The government recognizes this through several tax benefits. We explain which costs you can deduct and how to enter them in the Taxfix app.
-
The disability allowance depends on the degree of disability (GdB)
-
One-off additional costs can be claimed as extraordinary expenses
-
If you care for your child, you may qualify for a care allowance
-
Household-related services, such as a caregiver, are also deductible
-
Child benefit and child allowance can apply beyond the age of 25 in case of disability
π Your Guide
Disability Allowance
The disability allowance compensates for ongoing expenses, such as medication, aids, laundry, or care.
The amount is based on the degree of disability (GdB), which is determined by a medical examiner (between 20 and 100).
From the 2021 assessment period, the following allowances apply:
GdB | Annual Allowance |
---|---|
20 | β¬384 |
30 | β¬620 |
40 | β¬860 |
50 | β¬1,140 |
60 | β¬1,440 |
70 | β¬1,780 |
80 | β¬2,120 |
90 | β¬2,460 |
100 | β¬2,840 |
For people with the "H" (helpless) or "Bl" (blind) mark, an increased flat rate of β¬7,400 applies.
β οΈ Note: Additional requirements for a GdB under 50 no longer apply as of 2021.
You can transfer the allowance to yourself via the tax return if your child is affected. The Taxfix app will guide you through the necessary steps.
General Extraordinary Expenses
In addition to the flat rate, you can also claim additional one-time costs, such as:
-
Medical and rehabilitation costs
-
Travel costs to doctors
-
Car modifications (requires aG, Bl, or H mark)
-
Home or apartment adaptations
β οΈ These expenses are only tax-effective once they exceed your reasonable personal burden, which depends on income, marital status, and number of children.
Care Allowance
If you care for your child at home and do not receive care benefits, you may qualify for a care allowance.
Since 2021, the mark "helpless" is no longer required β care levels 2 or 3 are sufficient.
Household-Related Services
If, for example, you employ a caregiver in your home, you can deduct 20% of the costs (up to β¬4,000 per year).
Where to Enter the Information in the Taxfix App
To ensure tax benefits are applied correctly, follow these steps in the Taxfix app:
-
In the "About You" section, select that you have children.
-
This unlocks the "Children" category.
-
There, enter all relevant data for your child and select the "Disability" option.
-
You can then state that you want to apply the disability allowance for your child.
β‘οΈ You can also apply for the child allowance here. Youβll need your childβs tax ID number.
π Additionally, you can enter the disability ID card and the degree of disability (GdB) to ensure the allowance is correctly applied.
βΉοΈ Note: Tax benefits granted to a child with a disability can be transferred to the parents. The app guides you step by step.
Child Benefit and Child Allowance
If the disability occurred before the age of 25 and your child is unable to support themselves, entitlement to child benefit or the child allowance can extend beyond age 25.
You can also deduct childcare costs (e.g. daycare or nanny) as special expenses β usually up to the age of 14, and longer in case of disability.
You can find more information on entering children on your tax return in our articles in the Help Centre: Children in your tax return: When to declare them and which costs you can deduct.
