To correctly calculate your travel costs using the commuter allowance, you need to know how many days you actually commuted to work in the year. The Taxfix app helps you with this by automatically estimating your workdays. Here's how it works and what information you need to provide.
-
The number of workdays determines your travel cost deduction.
-
You can deduct €0.30 per kilometre for one-way travel; €0.38 applies from the 21st kilometre.
-
Weekends, holidays, sick days, vacation, and home office days do not count.
-
The app automatically calculates a realistic number of workdays.
-
Child sick days count as sick days and reduce your total workdays.
🚀 Your Guide
Why Workdays Matter for the Commuter Allowance
In your tax return, you can deduct €0.30 per kilometre (one-way) for every workday. From the 21st kilometre, the rate increases to €0.38 per kilometre (starting tax year 2022).
Example (up to 20 km):
Lisa worked 230 days and commuted 15 km one way:
230 x 15 km x €0.30 = €1,035
Example (more than 20 km):
Lisa commutes 27 km to work:
230 x 20 km x €0.30 + 230 x 7 km x €0.38 = €1,992
How to Calculate Your Workdays
Start with 365 days and subtract days you did not commute to work:
-
Weekends
-
Public holidays
-
Vacation days
-
Sick days
-
Child sick days
-
Home office days
-
Training days outside of your workplace
You don't need to calculate this yourself – the app helps you.
Do You Need to Provide Proof?
Usually, the tax office does not ask for proof. However, if you report more workdays than usual (e.g. no vacation at all), you should be able to provide an employer certificate.
Child sick days are treated the same as regular sick days and do not count as workdays.
How the Taxfix App Calculates Workdays
-
Go to the "Job" category.
-
Enter your workplace location, commute distance, and means of transport.
-
The app estimates your workdays (e.g. 250 for a standard 5-day week).
-
You can adjust the number if your actual workdays differ.
-
You can subtract child sick days, illness, or home office directly.
The app differentiates between:
-
Fixed workplace: Commuter allowance of €0.30/km (one way); from the 21st km: €0.38/km. Applies for car, public transport, bike, or walking.
-
Field work (travel-intensive jobs): €0.30/km for car, moped, motorcycle. For bus/train: deduct actual ticket costs.
Important: The commuter allowance covers all car expenses (e.g. fuel, repairs, insurance). Individual expenses are not deductible.
