Using the pre-filled tax return (VaSt) makes completing your tax return easier, as many details are retrieved directly from the tax office. Sometimes, however, the data retrieval is empty or incomplete. This usually happens due to the timing of the request or because the tax office has not yet made your data available.
π Quick & Easy
- Tax office data is usually only complete from the end of March.
- Retrieving data before March often results in missing or incomplete information.
- Once triggered, the data cannot be updated.
- Missing information must be entered manually.

- What if you already used VaSt last year?
- Can the data retrieval be corrected later?
Why is the data not yet available?
If you use the pre-filled tax return too early, the tax office may not have provided your data yet. This is especially common between January and March. Employers and insurance providers have until the end of February to submit data to the tax office. A complete data retrieval is therefore usually only possible from March onwards.
What can cause an empty data retrieval?
There are several possible reasons:
- Data not yet available: The tax office has not yet stored your current yearβs data.
- Tax return started before data retrieval: If you begin your return before clicking "Request data," the retrieval can no longer take place.
What happens if you trigger VaSt too early?
If you click "Request data" between January and March, the following may happen:
- Empty or incomplete data: For example, your employerβs income tax certificate may still be missing.
- Outdated data: In rare cases, older data might be retrieved. This cannot be updated and must be completed manually.
What if you already used VaSt last year?
Even if you successfully used VaSt last year, you should wait until March to start the data retrieval again. This gives the tax office enough time to provide all the necessary information.
π Tip: Wait until March. After that, you can open your return and start as usual. If matching data is available, a message will appear, and you can click "Pre-fill."
Can the data retrieval be corrected later?
No. If you trigger the retrieval before March and receive no or outdated data, you cannot repeat the process. A new data retrieval is technically not possible. Youβll need to enter any missing information manually.
π Note: You are not correcting the tax office data itself, but manually completing the fields shown in your tax return.
